This October, the Play’s the Thing

October 01, 2018

For our guests who are in the market for professional theater, we recommend a visit to Bryan’s own Stagecenter Theatre. Since 1964, Stagecenter has been a hub for regional audiences seeking Broadway-style shows and stellar performances. Past productions include “The Desk Set,” The Game's Afoot, or Holmes for the Holidays,” Tennessee Williams’ homage to “mendacity,” “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” and Woody Allen’s funny and touching tribute to the great Humphrey Bogart, “Play It Again, Sam.” October’s most delightful selection is author Mary Chase’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “Harvey.” Directed by Chaz Pittman, this whimsical and very funny tale ran for years on Broadway and was made into a feature film starring Jimmy Stewart and the delightful Josephine Hull, both of whom revised their Broadway roles in the movie. Showing through October 20, the play tells the tale of gentle eccentric of Elwood P. Dowd and his Pooka-manifested-as-giant-rabbit companion Harvey. The problem is that only Elwood can see Harvey, much to the consternation of his sister Veta and niece Myrtle May. It is when Veta makes the decision to commit Elwood to the local sanitarium that Harvey, in his own inimitable way, saves the day for all.
