The Inspirational Architecture of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church

August 06, 2018

With a population of more than 28 million people, Texas is one of the most diverse states in the country. One of the great benefits of cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity is the wide range of art and architecture produced. If you’re in the mood to explore one of our local architectural delights, head over to Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church, just a short drive from the Stella Hotel. In the final years of the 19th century, some 100 Italian families established the parish that, in 1927, erected Saint Anthony’s, an exquisite example of the Romanesque Revival style. Within the church, brilliant blues and whites evoke the pacifying presence of the Holy Virgin, while towering columns and elegant arches call forth the grandeur of Providence. In keeping with the latter theme, the altar at the front is decorated with the cosmic iconography of the firmament, an appropriately sublime image to behold during the masses conducted throughout the week. Visitors are welcome to attend an official service or simply stop by to marvel at the beauty of this architectural wonder.
