Saint Anthony's Catholic Church: An Architectural Wonder

August 08, 2017

One the most diverse states in the union, Texas is home to many religious traditions, including Roman Catholicism, which continues to play a role in the lives of almost a fifth of Texas residents. If you enjoy impressive architecture, both interior and exterior, we recommend a trip over Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church, just a short drive from the Stella Hotel. In 1896 a community of 100 Italian families founded the parish that would eventually give rise to Saint Anthony’s, a stunning Romanesque Revival-style building erected in 1927. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 and today serves a congregation of approximately 700. The interior of Saint Anthony’s is painted in dazzling hues of blue and white, the colors of the Virgin Mary. The nave is flanked by tall columns and sweeping arches that lead to an ornate altar at the front of Church, where the starry iconography of the heavens gazes down on clergy and congregation alike. Masses are conducted throughout the week, for those who are so inclined, and all are welcome to visit and enjoy this historic structure’s inspirational design.
